چکیده

A constitutive relation that accounts for the thermally activated dislocation motion and microstructure interaction is used to study the stability of a homogeneous solution of equations governing the simple shearing deformations of a thermoviscoplastic body. An instability criterion and an upper bound for the growth rate of the in®nitesimal deformations superimposed on the homogeneous solution are derived. By adopting Wright and Ockendon's postulate, i.e., the wavelength of the dominant instability mode with the maximum growth rate determines the minimum spacing between shear bands, the shear band spacing is computed. The e€ect of the initial dislocation density, the nominal strain-rate, and parameters describing the initial thermal activation and the initial microstructure interaction on the shear band spacing are delineated. Self organization of shear bands in stainless steel

The spatial distribution of shear bands was investigated in 304L stainless steel through the radial collapse of a thick-walled cylinder under high-strain-rate deformation (∼104 s−1). The shear-band initiation and propagation were also examined. Self-organization of multiple adiabatic shear bands was observed. The effect of grain size on spacing of shear bands was investigated at four different ...

We study thermomechanical deformations of a viscoplastic body deformed in simple shear. The e€ect of material elasticity is neglected but that of work hardening, strain-rate hardening, thermal softening, and strain-rate gradients is considered. The consideration of strain-rate gradients introduces a material characteristic length into the problem. A homogeneous solution of the governing equatio...

Effect of viscoplastic relations on the instability strain, shear band initiation strain, the strain corresponding to the minimum shear band spacing, and the band width in a thermoviscoplastic material

We study thermomechanical deformations of a steel block deformed in simple shear and model the thermoviscoplastic response of the material by four different relations. We use the perturbation method to analyze the stability of a homogeneous solution of the governing equations. The smallest value of the average strain for which the perturbed homogeneous solution becomes unstable is called the cr...

Dynamic recrystallization as a potential cause for adiabatic shear failure.

Dynamic recrystallization (DRX) is almost universally observed in the microstructure of adiabatic shear bands. It is usually admitted that DRX results from the large temperatures that develop in the band along with very high local strains. This paper reports the observation of dynamically recrystallized nanograins in Ti6Al4V alloy specimens that were impact loaded to only half the failure strai...

Instability strain and shear band spacing in simple tensile/ compressive deformations of thermoviscoplastic materials

We analyze the stability of homogeneous simple tensile/compressive deformations of an isotropic heat-conducting thermoviscoplastic bar by studying the growth of infinitesimal perturbations superimposed upon a homogeneous deformation. The smallest axial strain at which the superimposed perturbation has a positive initial growth rate is called the instability strain. Two criteria are used to dete...
